Fowl Play is exactly right!
We don't ever remember as kids being so fascinated by
CHICKENS!! (- "OMG" doesn't cut it - we LOVE em!!)
The everyday antics & feather-busting fun the Riverdale
Ridge henny-pennies have is a barrel of laughs!
They provide us not only with sinfully delicious eggs daily, and juicy & tender chicken for the freezer when needed; but sometimes to our dismay, many have become little feathery friends! (- We can't help it, they are so loveable!!)
They live together, eat together, roost together, and love to scratch around the farm together- looking for new adventures -and can be pretty comical as they tend
to be curious about anything that's new in their surroundings. We also have a few Guinea's (Guinea Fowl) who help keep possible "intruders" away from the hen
house- they can squak loud enough to wake the dead if they get their feathers in a bundle over a cat being too close or if someone new comes around that they feel isn't supposed to be there! They generally roost in the trees near the hen house and near the food so they are beneficial to have around the farm!
We've even had a couple of the hens who have decided they need a bit more privacy when laying their eggs. . . and you can imagine how hard we laughed when we discovered
that they were laying the eggs in the old outhouse! Yes,
we said OUTHOUSE!
Meat chickens must be reserved by June in order to be available in September or October. Please submit your reservations, as soon as possible, so we have a good idea of how many we need to raise on our fresh green pastures throughout the summer.
Fortunately, the outhouse has not been in use
for over 20-some years and we keep the door slightly open so we don't have to worry that they become "stuck" in the john!
We raised one of several baby chicks, who
has become so friendly. . . He was born on the 4th of July so obviously he was
named LIBERTY! Then you can imagine our giggling surprise when we realized that SHE was a HE! But, alas,
Roosters are chickens too, you know!
